Anodes are used to protect marine vehicles from under water corrosion.
They are made from a metal alloy with a more "active" voltage  than the metal of the hull. The difference means that the anode corrodes, so that the anode material is consumed instead of the structure.
Zinc anodes are used for sea water, aluminium for brackish and magnesium for fresh water.
